When it comes to the core value of service, it is normally in terms of serving those who need it now and those who will benefit from it in the future.  Service is not simply performing a charitable act, but acting for the good of others in a significant way.  There are many levels of involvement and a never-ending list of opportunities to serve.

There are a lot of people in this world who could use a hand.  By taking some time recognize and actually consider this, you might be moved to help.  You can get your hands dirty and commit to some volunteer time at any number of service organizations, or you can take the easy way out and just donate some money.  Look for service opportunities like these at your local YMCA, homeless shelters, and city council events.  If you really want to make a difference though, you’ll want to become involved with something that impacts people now and will continue to help in the future.  Helping prosperity can come in the way of mentoring kids, protecting your country, or even building a well in a third-world country.  You can join the National Guard, Americorps, Green Peace, or go overseas as an individual to help people first-hand.  You can even get into a career in the service industry.  Teachers are considered people who are helping prosperity, as are doctors, social service workers, and counselors.  Some of these jobs don’t pay a lot, but they do offer a great sense of satisfaction.

Whatever you choose to do to help people or the world in general, you’re providing yourself a service as well.  It gives you the satisfying feeling of knowing you helped make a difference that might not otherwise have happened.  You left a mark on the world.
